Working with and for older people in Lambeth

Age Concern Lambeth Hosts Lambeth LINk
Age Concern Lambeth has been appointed as the host organisation for the Lambeth Local Involvement Network (LINk). Our appointment started on 1st August 2008 and runs to 31st March 2011.
Local Involvement Networks are a new Government initiative. They aim to ensure that more people have a stronger say in how their local health and social care services are planned, commissioned and delivered.
LINks were introduced in the Local Government & Public Involvement in Health Act, 2007. The Act requires all Local Authorities with social service responsibilities to contract independent host organisations to oversee and support the establishment of LINks. The initial contracts run for three years.
Our main task as the host for the Lambeth LINk is to help establish, develop and provide ongoing support to the new LINk. It is our job is to make the LINk an effective body for involving users in the planning, delivery and scrutiny of local health and social care services.
Age Concern Lambeth will work with a LINk Steering Group - or similar governing body - to ensure that all existing forums, networks, user groups, individuals and communities of interest have the chance to become involved and to be heard. As the host we will also work to ensure that gaps in services and health inequalities are identified and addressed and that health and social care services also engage with the LINk and remain responsive to community health and social care needs.
We are currently recruiting a team of 3 staff to work with the LINk. When they are in place we will launch a programme of events and information to spread the news of the LINk. This will also tell everyone interested in health and social care services about how they can become involved to influence how local services are developed and run. We will also work in the first year to support LINk members to set priorities and to identify the areas in which they can have most impact.
Age Concern Lambeth has strong working relationships with many individuals and partner organisations working with the whole community. We are very excited at this opportunity to support local people to influence services

Age Concern Lambeth’s Befriending Service was officially launched in November 2007. The service is growing so we need volunteers to visit and support isolated older people.
There are many older people in Lambeth who live on their own, and who may not have any regular visitors or opportunities to meet with friends or family. There is plenty of evidence to show that people in this situation suffer more from poor physical and mental health and may spend more time in hospital or end up moving in to residential care.
The Befriending Service aims to change the quality of life for older people, making a positive contribution to their daily lives by providing companionship and support.
We are looking for people of all ages who can spare 1 – 2 hours a week to visit and befriend an older person. We particularly need help between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. We will provide you with training and support, and also carry out Criminal Records Bureau checks.
We are constantly receiving requests for the Befriending Service and we will always make a careful match with a volunteer to help find shared interests.
To find out more about being a volunteer with Age Concern Lambeth, call team member Petrina Hughes on 020 7346 6817 or e-mail her at befriending@aclambeth.org.uk
